Epoxy Resin and Wood Homeware: What Importers Should Check Before Ordering
Updated: Oct 6

Epoxy resin combined with wood has become one of the most eye-catching categories in home decor. Cake stands, stools, salad bowls and platters with colourful resin artwork sell well in gift shops and online. Because resin is a synthetic material, importers need to think about how the product will be used. Here is a practical checklist.
What is epoxy resin homeware?
Artisans shape a wooden base, often mango wood, and then pour or apply a coloured epoxy resin layer or insert. Once cured, the resin forms a hard glossy surface that can carry florals, geometric patterns or illustrations.
Decorative or food contact? Decide first
This is the most important question. Many resin pieces are made to be decorative. If you plan to sell an item for serving food, the product must meet food contact rules in your market.
European Union
The framework Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 requires that materials do not transfer substances to food in quantities that could endanger health or change the food's taste, smell or composition.
Regulation (EC) No 1895/2005 restricts certain epoxy derivatives in food contact materials.
Regulation (EU) 2024/3190 covers bisphenol A and other bisphenols in food contact materials. Many epoxy systems are bisphenol based, so ask your resin supplier for a declaration.
See the European Commission's food contact materials page for the full picture.
United States
21 CFR 175.300 sets conditions for resinous and polymeric coatings used as food contact surfaces.
Our advice: unless a product has been tested and declared compliant for your market, sell it as decorative and suggest using a plate, liner or wrap for food. That is how we describe our own epoxy pieces.
Care and heat
Wipe clean with a soft damp cloth. Do not soak.
Keep away from dishwashers and microwaves.
Do not pour hot food or liquids directly onto resin, and avoid direct sunlight for long periods to limit yellowing.
Put these points on your care card. Clear care instructions reduce returns.
Quality checks
Cure: no tacky spots or strong smell.
Surface: bubbles and dust inclusions should be within an agreed limit.
Bond: check that the resin and wood layers are firmly joined with no gaps.
Wood: look for cracks, loose joints and even finishing on the underside.
Folding parts: for foldable stools and cake stands, test the hinge or joint several times.
Other rules to remember
The wooden part still counts as wood. Wooden tableware and ornaments are within the scope of the EU Deforestation Regulation from 30 December 2026 for most businesses, and from 30 June 2027 for micro and small operators. We explain this in our guide to wooden handicrafts and EUDR. The final HS code for mixed wood and resin items depends on the material that gives the item its essential character, so confirm it with your customs broker.

Frequently asked questions
Is epoxy resin food safe?
Only if the finished item has been tested and declared compliant with the food contact rules of your market. Otherwise sell it as decorative.
Can epoxy resin trays go in the dishwasher?
No. Wipe them with a soft damp cloth and keep them away from dishwashers, microwaves and very hot food.
Does EUDR apply to epoxy and wood products?
The wooden part can bring the item into scope if it is classified under a listed wood heading. Confirm the HS code with your broker.
