How to Choose Handicraft Exporters from India: A Buyer’s Checklist for UK, US, Australian and UAE Retailers
Updated: Oct 6
Search for “handicraft exporters from India” and you will find thousands of results: manufacturers, exporters, trading companies and marketplaces. For a retailer in London, New York, Sydney or Dubai, the hard part is telling a reliable partner from a risky one. This checklist covers what to look for when choosing handicraft suppliers in India, based on what our own buyers ask us most.

1. Manufacturer, exporter or trading agent?
A handmade handicraft manufacturer in India works directly with artisan workshops and controls production. An exporter handles documents, shipping and compliance. Many good partners do both. Trading agents can be useful for very mixed orders but add a layer between you and the maker. Ask who actually makes the product, where, and how quality is checked.
2. Authenticity and craft origin
Several Indian crafts are protected by Geographical Indication (GI) registration, including Jaipur blue pottery, Sanganeri hand block printing and Saharanpur wood craft. A GI links a product to its place and traditional method. Ask suppliers which cluster their products come from, and check the craft on India’s GI Registry. Machine-printed fabric sold as hand block print is a common problem; look for small registration variations that show hand work.
3. Samples before bulk
Always approve physical samples. A reliable exporter will agree a sample timeline, keep a reference “golden sample” for production, and explain which variations are natural in handmade work (colour shade, glaze flow, wood grain) and which are defects.
4. MOQs, lead times and payment terms
Ask for minimum order quantities per design and per order, production lead time after sample approval, and payment terms in writing. Common terms are a deposit before production and the balance before shipment. Be cautious of suppliers who quote unrealistically short lead times for large handmade orders.
5. Market-specific compliance
A good handicraft exporter understands your market’s rules. Ask about:
UK: origin documents for zero tariffs under the UK–India agreement, and food-contact tests for ceramics.
US: HTS codes, Lacey Act wood details and FDA lead testing for tableware.
Australia: ECTA certificates of origin and bark-free, pest-free wooden goods.
UAE: CEPA certificates of origin and invoice attestation.
6. Export credentials and documents
Indian exporters need an Importer Exporter Code (IEC) from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, and many register with the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH). Ask for the company’s legal name, address and IEC, and check that invoices, packing lists and certificates of origin will be issued in that name.
7. Communication and transparency
Clear written quotes, prompt replies across time zones, production photos and honest updates matter as much as price. Choose a partner who tells you early when a glaze batch or a monsoon delay affects your order.
