Jaipur Blue Pottery and FDA Lead Rules: What US Buyers Need to Check

Jaipur blue pottery is one of India’s best-known GI-tagged crafts, made from a quartz-based body and decorated with cobalt and turquoise glazes. US shoppers love it for vases, jars, plates and bowls. If any piece may be used for food or drink, it must meet US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) limits on lead that can leach from the glaze. This guide explains the limits and how to buy safely. Here is how blue pottery FDA requirements work in practice.

FDA lead action levels for ceramic ware

FDA’s Compliance Policy Guide Sec. 545.450 sets action levels for lead that leaches from ceramic foodware, measured in micrograms per millilitre of leaching solution. Six units are tested:

  • Flatware (plates, saucers): 3.0 µg/mL, based on the average of six units.

  • Small hollowware (bowls and similar, other than cups and mugs): 2.0 µg/mL in any one of six units.

  • Large hollowware (other than pitchers): 1.0 µg/mL in any one of six units.

  • Cups and mugs: 0.5 µg/mL in any one of six units.

  • Pitchers: 0.5 µg/mL in any one of six units.

Decorative pieces need permanent marking

Under 21 CFR 109.16, ceramic ware that is decorative but could be mistaken for tableware must carry a permanent “Not for Food Use” style mark, plus a label at the point of sale. Many blue pottery items such as wall plates, aroma burners and trinket dishes fall into this category. Agree the marking with your supplier before production so it is fired into the piece.

California and state rules

Retailers selling into California should also consider Proposition 65, which can require warnings for products that expose consumers to listed chemicals, including lead. Requirements for ceramic ware are set largely through legal settlements, so take advice if California is a major market.

Blue pottery FDA checklist: how to buy for the US with confidence

  • Decide early which items are food-use and which are decorative.

  • For food-use items, request lead and cadmium leach testing to the FDA method from an accredited laboratory, per glaze and shape.

  • For decorative items, require permanent “Not for Food Use” marking and a matching swing tag.

  • Keep test reports linked to production batches.
